"Every contact leaves a trace." is what Edmond Locard postulated around a hundred years ago. Finger- or palmmarks are a solid proof of (indirect) contact between a finger or palm and a surface.

Dispite the enormous increase in the use of DNA evidence in the criminal investigations, the use of fingermarks is still seen as one of the strongest features in forensic science for individualisation purposes.

 

Several research projects on different aspects of fingerprints are in progress at the NFI in the Hague, the Netherlands.
